The National Movement for Release of Political Prisoners (NMRPP) handed over a special letter to President Maithripala Sirisena today (10), requesting the release of all political prisoners who are currently detained in several prisons cross the country.
Although the government and authorities promised to offer amnesty to the inmates who jailed due to political reasons, now it has been proved that the authorities are ignoring the issue, Coordinator of the NWRPP Rev. M. Shakthivel pointed out.
Therefore, the inmates have commenced the hunger strike which they stopped temporarily again until they receive proper solution for their grievance, he added.
He also said that the president and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) must take the responsibility of the lives of these inmates.
Over 200 Tamil prisoners who are in jails across the country recently commenced a hunger strike to protest against being jailed for years without trial.
The government recently promised that a solution to the question will be given by November 7.
