Frontline Socialist Party leader Kumar Gunaratnam was arrested by Police at Anguruwella in Kegalle District by the Kegalle Police a short while ago.
He was arrested for violating immigration and emigration laws, Police Media Unit said.
Gunaratnam, who is currently an Australian citizen has been asked by the Immigration and Emigration Department to leave the country. However he remains in the island and is demanding the right to engage in politics.
Gunaratnam was the Trincomalee District leader of the JVP during the 1987-89 insurrection. He broke away with a faction of JVP members in 2011 and later left for Australia.
He returned to the island on January 1 during the Presidential Election on a tourist visa. His visa expired at the end of January.
The Frontline Socialist Party led an unsuccessful campaign to win back Gunaratnam's right to do politics in Sri Lanka.
