A group of lawyers filed a complaint with the National Police Commission against Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara, alleging that a recent comment by the Spokesperson violated professional ethics.
Gunasekara had allegedly said that it was not correct for lawyers to represent Dunesh Priyashantha alias 'Kondaya' since he already has a criminal record.
Attorney-at-Law Udul Premaratne, who was one of the lawyers who filed the complaint, said that Police Spokesman cannot express his opinion on any matter. He is merely a spokesman and has to act in that manner, Premaratne argued. Furthermore, the Police has no right to ask lawyers not to represent any person in court, Premaratne said.
Since ASP Ruwan Gunasekara is also a lawyer, this violated professional ethics of the lawyers, Premaratne said. Therefore, the Bar Association will also be notified of the matter, he said.
