Reforms Underway: Jaffna University VC

Education sector was never affected in Sri Lanka during the period of unrest in the country. In fact, many reforms took place in the sector there, according to Vice-Chancellor of Jaffna University Vasanthi Arasaratnam. 
 
In a chat with newsmen in Tiruchi on Tuesday, she explained the reforms taking place now, including bringing in social harmony, soft skill development, creating understanding among people on different cultures and uplifting their financial status. 
 
She added that students from different religions and hailing from different parts of the nation were admitted at present in the university and this was a good sign. She said the Indian Government had extended 300 million Sri Lankan rupees each to agriculture and engineering faculties of Ruhuna University, Matharai in Sri Lanka for its development.
 
She said her university already had an MoU with the University of Madras, Sai Ram University and a higher education Institute at Mysore and she was willing to sign more such MOUs with Indian educational institutions for further development of education sector in Sri Lanka.
 
Delivering a special address, she called upon women to have self-confidence and develop themselves financially and socially. The one-day conference on women entrepreneurship ecosystem- Present and Future (Project on Business and management capacity development of rural women entrepreneurs of India and Sri Lanka, funded by  Asia Foundation), was jointly organised by Asia Foundation and the Centre for Entrepreneurship development and incubation (CEDI) of the National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi here on Tuesday.  
 
She also pointed out that the scheme would be useful for widow victims of the war period. The university was making all out efforts to uplift women in Sri Lanka. M.M.M. Najim, Vice Chancellor, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, hailed the efforts of Indian Government, especially NIT-T, towards development of women entrepreneurs of both countries in business and management capacities.
