Tragic scenes are unfolding in Paris as terrorist attacks have killed more than 120 and injured at least 200 more, many critically. This morning's Paris newspapers all had full cover pages dedicated to the incident, with some using belligerent headlines. The headline of the daily "Le Parisien" (The Parisian) said "Cette fois, il est la guerre" (This Time it's War).

A harthal was launched today across the Northern Province and parts of the Eastern Province against the detention of 'political prisoners'. The funeral of Maduluwawe Sobith Thera will be held this afternoon at the Parliament Grounds with full State Honours. The public can pay their final respects to Sobitha Thera till mid-day at Kotte Sri Naga Viharaya. The government has declared a National Day of Mourning today.

Hindus celebrate Deepavali (festival of lights) today. Religious observances were held around the country, including the Upcountry and the north, in early morning to mark the day.
