Sangakkara Starts Surrey Stint With Century

Sri Lanka's ace wicketkeeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara carried his marvellous form from the 2015 Cricket World Cup to the English county season in his opening game for Surrey against Glamorgan on Sunday (19).

Coming to bat at the familiar Number 3 position, Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 112 to help Surrey reach a formiddable 363 for just 3 wickets at stumps on Day 1 in the four day game.

Surrey elected to bat after winning the toss at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. All batsmen, with the strange exception of Kevin Pietersen, made big scores.

Openers Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari gave an excellent start to the innings, putting on 104 runs for the first wicket at a rate of three and a half runs per over. However, both lost their wickets in quick succession and when Pietersen was dismissed for 19, Surrey were in a spot of bother at 150 for 3.

At this point, Steven Davies, also a left handed wicketkeeper batsman, joined Sangakkara in the middle and started piling up runs. Davies was 109 not out at the end of the day.

Sangakkara scored 14 boundaries and a six in his 112 while Davies found the boundary 16 times.
