Andy Murray was eliminated from the Paris Masters after being beaten 7-5 6-2 by Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

The British No 1 had already done enough to book his spot at the ATP World Tour Finals but will not be adding another title to the three he has won recently.

Murray was competitive throughout the first set and even went a break up in the second before Djokovic took control of the contest. The world No 1 has won all four of his matches against Murray this year.

Djokovic will face Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals, the US Open finalist defeating David Ferrer 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to progress to the last four and also seal a spot at the World Tour Finals.

Ferrer's hopes of qualifiying for the London showpice are now over, with Milos Raonic and Tomas Berdych also having sealed places in the season-ending event.

Djokovic's progression to the semi-finals coupled with Roger Federer's shock defeat to Raonic earlier in the day means the Serbian has strengthened his position in the fight for the year-end No 1 ranking position.

"Obviously it helps in the battle between Roger and me that I progressed to the semis and he didn't," Djokovic told Sky Sports.

"But I'm defending 1000 points here and I'm defending 1500 points in London. That's a lot of points. I try not to think about those calculations.

"My point is that I have to be able to focus on my own matches and try to play as well as I did in the first two matches in this tournament."

The first set between Murray and Djokovic progressed on serve, although the Brit survived a scare in the eighth game after a successful review which negated what would have been the first break of the match.

The game returned to 40-40 and Murray went on to hold, but the Serb would take the first set after 64 minutes when he broke his opponent in the 12th game.

Murray broke Djokovic early in the second set to take a 2-1 lead but the top seed hit back immediately with a break of his own to level it at 2-2.

Djokovic then held serve and forced another break, leaving Murray in a precarious position at 4-2 down.

Djokovic quickly put the match to bed with a third consecutive break of serve, Murray crashing a forehand into the net when match point down.
