Former Sri Lankan Cricket Captain Arjuna Ranatunga has said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is disrupting the stability of International Cricket.

Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya the former Captain has said that the he backs Ian Botham’s statement where he said that ‘the IPL is slowly killing the spirit of cricket’.

Ranatunga pointed out that nowadays players are more interested in playing for clubs and leagues instead of representing their countries in International Cricket.

“Sri Lankan players should not forget that they got the opportunity to play league cricket because of their presence in International level”, he said.

The former Sri Lankan Captain maintained that the IPL has brought corruption into the sports while highlighting a few incidents where Cricket players of international scale have been banned from international cricket due to match fixing allegations during league tournaments.

Ranatunga highlighted the irony of N. Srinivasan, the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, who was demanded to step down from his position by the Indian Court, becoming the newly elected Chairman of the International Cricket Committee (ICC).

Srinivasan is being investigated for several scams, including one involving betting on IPL cricket matches, where his son-in-law has been indicted for passing inside information to bookies and is in jail. He is also being investigated as a major investor in the massive corruption surrounding Jagan Mohan Reddyin March 2014.
