The South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn will miss the second Test with England in Cape Town after the injury suffered to his right shoulder showed insufficient improvement.
The captain Hashim Amla has said he will be replaced by the 20-year-old Kagiso Rabada, who took six for 16 on his one-day international debut against Bangladesh in July.
Steyn had to twice pull out of bowling on day three of the first Test in Durban after reporting pain in the joint, before undergoing a scan during the evening session.
England went on to win the match by 241 runs and will be confident of their chances at Newlands, especially as South Africa are also missing another paceman in Vernon Philander, who was injured in a football warm-up game during the series in India when he tore ligaments in his ankle.
In addition, they have had to call up the uncapped bowler Hardus Viljoen as cover for Kyle Abbott - himself called up in place of Philander – who is struggling with a hamstring injury.
Their team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, said of Steyn’s injury at the time: “Dale developed a spasm or stiffness in his shoulder, partly because he’d just come back from an injury. After bowling 25 overs in the first innings he felt discomfort. The scans have shown there’s no tear, no strain, so we’re treating it very much as stiffness.”
The 32-year-old – the No1-ranked bowler in Test cricket – had only just returned to action after seven weeks out with a groin injury suffered during South Africa’s 3-0 defeat in India last month.
Viljoen’s inclusion follows call-ups for Quinton de Kock and Chris Morris as the current world No1 side aim to bounce back in the four-match series.
De Kock keeps wicket which could free up AB de Villiers to concentrate on his batting, while the all-rounder Morris has yet to make a Test debut but could help out on the bowling front.
