Priyantha Sirisena Murder: Lakmal Saputhanthri Further Remanded

Saputhanthrige Don Nishan Lakmal Saputhanthri, the accused in the murder of Priyantha Sirisena, was presented to the Polonnaruwa Magistrate Courts on Wednesday (08).

Magistrate Ruwan Tharaka Heenatigala ordered the postponment of the case to April 22.

Saputhanthri’s mother and father were also present at the courts, Asian Mirror reporter in Polonnaruwa said.

Priyantha Sirisena, youngest brother of President Maithripala Sirisena, and better known as “Weli Raju”, passed away on March 28 after being attacked on the back of his head with an axe on March 26.

During interrogations, Saputhanthri revealed that the crime was committed in retribution as Priyantha Sirisena had yelled at his parents using foul language.

Saputhanthri’s father said that on that day ‘Weli Raju’ came into his house yelling “where is Lakmal?”, Asian Mirror reporter said.

Lakmal had assaulted Sirisena after the father and mother went inside the house. Therefore they did not witness the crime, the father said.
