Remanded MPs Granted Permission To Attend Parliament

February 05, 2015

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage today (5) granted permission to former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake to attend Parliament meetings while being in remand custody.

The Fort Magistrate has reportedly granted permission to Attanayake after taking into consideration a motion filed by Presidential Counsel Kalinga Indratissa.

With this development, Attanayake, who is in remand until February 12, will be able to attend Parliament gatherings from today.

Meanwhile, Prison officials said other MPs who are in remand, namely Palitha Thewarapperuma and Premalal Jayasekera, will also be allowed to attend Parliamentary sessions.

Attanayake was arrested on February 02 by the Criminal Investigation Department on the grounds that the former UNP General Secretary presented a false document to media while claiming it was a ‘secret agreement’ between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Police Media Spokesman told media that in the document, the signatures of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had been forged.
