Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told Asian Mirror that he personally visited the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and requested them to correct the false story it carried on UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa’s crossover.
The state-run television carried a story on the day of presidential election saying UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Carlton Residence in Tangalle and pledged support to the President.
The UNP Deputy Leader complained the Elections Department that the story was completely false and baseless.
The Elections Commissioner, speaking to Asian Mirror a short while ago, said the Rupavahini officials agreed to carry a correction over the false news item. It is learnt that the Elections Commissioner instructed the Rupavahini authorities to refrain from violating election laws.
Although Asian Mirror attempted to contact Chandrapala Liyanage, Director General of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation over the same matter, our efforts did not bear fruit.
