Election Monitors Express Concerns Over Violations Of Election Laws

Election monitors have expressed their concern at the continuing violations of election laws in the presidential election campaign.

People's Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said in a media briefing yesterday that there had been 42 cases of election law violations reported on yesterday after the campaign period ended. These included the distribution of fake ballot papers, he added.

Meanwhile, Campaign for Free and Fair Election Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon said yesterday that although the day after campaigning ended was calm, the last day of the last day of the campaign had been violent. He said that the worst case reported was the clash between UPFA and UNP supporters in Rambukkana.

Furthermore, the Center for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) released its interim report yesterday evening and said that it was concerned at the election law violations such as misuse of state property, behavior of state media institutions and the partiality of the police.

CaFFE also expressed these concerns and also said that indirect campaigning was still taking place and added that distribution of 'election goodies' was still taking place.
