Multiple sources from both political camps told ‘Asian Mirror’ that there will be more crossovers in the next 72 hours ending with the midnight of January 05.
Opposition sources told Asian Mirror that several heavyweights of the ruling party, who hold cabinet portfolios, have agreed to join the Common Opposition before January 05. Some are expected to join the final election rally of Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena which will take place on January 05.
A sizable proportion of Cabinet Ministers and seniors of the ruling party have distanced themselves from the national level campaign of the United People’s Freedom Alliance.
Former Deputy Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake, who crossed over to the opposition two days back, told media that a senior Cabinet minister will cross over to the opposition within the next two days.Ekanayake said the Minister has already held negotiations with the leaders of the Common Opposition.
Meanwhile, the government is on a feverish attempt to materialize “one big crossover” from the opposition to the government before the election. “The government’s plan is quite obvious. They desperately need one big crossover to turn the tables on the opposition,” political observers said.
All the comprehensive opinion polls pertaining to the election have highlighted the fact that the winner of this election will not be able to obtain more than 55 percent. There is also a possibility that none of the candidate would go past 50 percent – the “winning mark” where the presidential election is concerned.
