Samanalee Fonseka, Indrachapa Liyanage, Lakshman Wijesekara and several other artistes supporting Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena have come under attack in Kurunegala during a political meeting.
A spokesperson of the opposition said a group wearing the t-shirts of “Blue Brigade” – a youth organization supporting President Rajapaksa – pelted stones at the artistes while they were performing at a political event in Kurunegala.
He said a local government politician of the ruling party led the attack. Samanalee Fonseka and indrachapa Liyanawage were hospitalized following the attack due to minor injuries.
A group of artistes recently formed an organization called “New Generation” (Aluth Parapura) to support the candidature of Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena. Fonseka, who is the niece of UPFA National List Parliamentarian Malini Fonseka, is known as a prominent member of the initiative.
Eye-witnesses who spoke to Asian Mirror said three police officers were deployed to provide security to the political meeting.
