Jathika Hela Urumaya Educational Secretary Anuruddha Pradeep stated that democracy should be established in a society for it to be stable.
Speaking at the ‘Satana’ political talk show on Sirasa TV last evening, he said that any society should have justice and fairness to prevent it from disintegrating from within. The tool for this is democracy, he added.
He agreed that external powers can play a role in disintegrating a society. But the necessary conditions must be there for external forces to exploit the conditions, he added. This was the reason that a single act of cruelty by a policeman led to the overthrow of President Ben Ali in Tunisia, Pradeep added.
However, certain countries have remained free of Western influences despite the attempts by the West to destabilize them, Pradeep added, giving Iran and Cuba as examples.
If there was lack of democracy, the country has to change and establish democracy and rule of law so that the country will become stable, he added. The change the common opposition is seeking is aimed at stabilizing the country, he added.
