Opposition stalwart and Lecturer of Archeology at University of Sri Jayawardenapura Dambara Amila Thera said that people need change since the government failed to deliver democracy after the LTTE was defeated.
The LTTE was defeated after many sacrifices so that people could live free and the political rights that could not be safeguarded under the threat of terrorism could be established, he argued.
Speaking on the political talk show ‘Satana’ on Sirasa TV last evening, he said that with the rebel LTTE in operation, a government faced difficulties in assuring democracy and development. But once it was defeated such rights had to be instituted, which the government has not done so, Amila Thera added.
The people expected the establishment of good governance and democracy, reduction of crimes, poverty alleviation, improvement of education and other important changes. But the government has not been able to deliver, Amila Thera added.
He mentioned that the people were now asking for change because of this failure by the government.
