Six days have passed since the Polonnaruwa – Madakalapuwa road was closed due to heavy floods in the area.
Several areas around Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa have been affected due to the floods. The situation has occurred as a result of Mahaweli River overflowing due to heavy rain.
Meanwhile, two people have been killed in two landslide incidents in the district of Badulla, the National Building Research Organisation says that landslide warnings have been issued to eleven districts in the country. High risk areas include, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla,Kandy Kegalle,Matale, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ratnapura and Kaluthara districts.
Meanwhile, the Metrological Department has requested the people to be on alert regarding the escalating weather conditions.
More than 60,000 were evacuated because of flooding and mudslides, and 3 people died. The Disaster Management Center reported that 2 others were injured and 1,900 homes were destroyed in 15 districts.
The Metrological Department reported that significant rainfalls were reported from main meteorological stations during last 24hrs ending at 08.30 a.m. today: 275.8mm from Pottuvil, 195.9 from Badulla, 145.7mm from Moneragala, 134.9 mm from Bandarawela and 112.0 from Hambantota.
