With Opposition Leader of Eastern Provincial Council pledging support to Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena, the ruling party is now facing a majority issue at the Eastern Provincial Council.
The new crossover came just a day after Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s party decided to support the Common opposition. The ACMC, led by Bathiudeen, holds three seats in the Eastern Provincial Council.
Therefore, within two days, the ruling party has lost a considerable number of seats at the Eastern Provincial Council.
Ameer Ali, who was an ACMC Provincial Councilor of the Eastern Provincial Council, was appointed as a National list Parliamentarian of the UPFA by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Ali, yesterday, decided to support the Common Candidate, along with Bathiudeen.
According to Eastern PC sources , a councilor yet to be sworn in for the seat vacated by Ameer Ali.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, a spokesman of the opposition said they will soon “topple” the Eastern Provincial Council – probably before the upcoming presidential election.
