Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando was arrested after he surrendered to the police over an alleged attack on opposition supporters at Hambantota yesterday.

The opposition claimed that the Mayor was instrumental in the assault which was carried out in the presence of Police officers.

In response, the Mayor denied allegations and said he also lost his wrist watch when he tried to prevent the clash which occurred between the opposition activists and the “people” of Hambanthota.

Britto Fernando, Jayathilaka Bandara, Philip Dissanayake and several activists were attacked by goons, opposition sources also added.

They came under attacked when they attempted to conduct a “street protest” at the Hambanthota Town.

Fernando rose to fame due to “Toy Pistol” controversy involving some opposition Parliamentarian who visited to Hambanthota for a fact finding mission.
