While President Mahinda Rajapaksa is widely criticized for his superstitious habits, Common Candidate fof the opposition Maithripala Siripala is also showing that he is no exception, when it comes to his belief in supernatural powers.
At a recently held election rally, the Common Candidate was seen holding a devise called “Vajra” – something that is often seen with President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The devise, according to those who believe in supernatural powers, is capable of mustering the powers of supernatural forces to attract people!
However, Maithripala Srisena has publicly claimed that he has no faith in astrologers and fortune-tellers. But, the Common Candidate has now demonstrated that he too is a believer and a follower of super natural powers.
Vajra is a Sanskrit word meaning both thunderbolt and diamond.Additionally, it is a weapon which is used as a ritual object to symbolize both the properties of a diamond (indestructibility) and a thunderbolt. The use of the vajra as a symbolic and ritual tool spread from India along with Indian religions and culture to other parts of Asia.
In the Buddhist culture, the vajra is the symbol of Vajrayana, one of the three major branches of Buddhism. Vajrayana is translated as "Thunderbolt Way” or "Diamond Way" and can imply the thunderbolt experience of Buddhist enlightenment or bodhi. It also implies indestructibility, just as diamonds are harder than other gemstones.
