A group of senior Army officers, who are now retired, met with Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga this morning at the Opposition Leader’s Office for a special discussion.
The meeting was aimed at discussing essential security measures for the party supporters and activists on January 08.
Asian Mirror reliably learns that the meeting was attended by two retired Major Generals and a group of ex-Brigadiers and Colonels. They had advised the party on measures it should take to protect the party supporters in its run up to the presidential election.
The opposition alleges that the party supporters are being attacked and harassed on a regular basis by goons operating under the instructions of some politicians of the ruling party.
The opposition fears that the election violence will reach its zenith on the day of election. A party spokesman told Asian Mirror that the main opposition party had realized the importance of a comprehensive security plan to protect its supporters and activists.
John Amaratunga too has vast experience when it comes to security related matters as he has served as the Internal Affairs Minister overlooking Police Department, under the UNP government.
Interestingly, the meeting took place amidst rumours that the Chief Opposition Whip would cross over to the government ahead of the presidential election. However, Amaratunga had strictly denied the rumours saying he would not leave the United National Party
