Chief Opposition Whip and UNP Parliamentarian John Amaratunga had told his close associates that he would make an “important decision” on December 25.
Amaratunga had made this remark amidst rumours that he would cross over to the government. However, speaking to media last week, Amaratunga categorically denied crossover claims saying he had no intention to leave the United National Party. However, the Senior Parliamentarian had not revealed as to what his “important decision” would be.
Asian Mirror is now in a position to reveal that former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has held discussions with several prominent politicians in the opposition, over the past few days. Amaratunga, according to highly placed political sources, is also on the contact-list of Attanayake.
Amaratunga recently organized a rally in Wattala supporting the Common Candidate of the opposition, which was also attended by UNP National Elader Ranil Wickremesinghe. The UNP Leader decided to attend the meeting in Wattala in the wake of rumours that Amaratunga was planning to cross over,
Meanwhile. Speaking to Asian Mirror, two weeks ago, Amaratunga said such claims were frivolous and he had no intension to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“The people who spread such stories are the ones who want to break the opposition. That is all I can say about the matter”, Amaratunga, who is one of the most senior parliamentarians in the opposition, said.
