A high profile strategy meeting is presently underway at the former President's residence, with the participation of the Leaders of the common opposition including common candidate Maithripala Sirirsena, UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesnghe, Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka, and UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera.
The meeting is aimed at reviewing the progress of the political campaign of the common opposition and to discuss its ways forward.
A detailed PowerPoint presentation has been done with relevant statistics pertaining to the present campaign while analyzing its trajectory vis-à-vis the Presidential campaign in 2010- in which Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was the common candidate. The presentation has been prepared with the assistance of prominent private research firm in Colombo.
The presentation state that the starting points of the two campaigns are the same; but Maithripala Sirisena popularity rate shows a remarkable upward mobility over the past three weeks. The presentation also state that this is in stark contrast to the campaign of Sarath Fonseka whose popularity rate went downhill since his first election rally in Kandy.
The strategy meeting will also focus on launching a cohesive multiparty campaign with active participation of all stakeholders of the common opposition.
The meeting will also discuss possible crossovers from the government to the opposition in the coming days. According to highly placed political sources, four ruling party MPs have promised the leaders of the common opposition that they would cross over today or tomorrow.
