Despite widespread speculations that four of the ruling party MPs would join the opposition during Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena's election rally in Kandy, the event ended peacefully on Tuesday evening without no major drama.
Before the commencement of the rally, four unreserved seats were Kept on the stage to indicate that there will be crossovers during the event. Many names were mentioned in connection with possible crossovers, but none of the 'suspicious' MPs were seen in the vicinity of the rally.
Taking the suspicion to a new level, the Twitter account of presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena tweeted just minutes before the commencement of the rally saying 'rumours can be true'.
Throughout the rally however, leaders of the common opposition indicated that there will be more and more crossover in the coming days, from the government to the common opposition. In his speech, Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena confidently predicted a historic victory for the opposition at the forthcoming presidential election.
The highlight of the event was Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena wearing a Narendra Modi type dress for what seemed to be his first official election rally.
Many top rung leaders of the UNP, Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka, Rajitha Senaratne and Hemakumara Nanayakkara attended the rally, representing the allies of the common candidate of the opposition.
UPFA Western Provincial Council member Hirunika Peemachandra, who crossed over to the opposition yesterday, also attended the rally.
UNP representatives who attended the rally said called the Common Candidate's first rally a major success.
