Asian Mirror reliably learns that National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has decided to express his support to the three main proposals of the opposition - abolition of the Executive Presidency, changing the electoral system and devising a new constitution.

However, it is still a question whether he would leave the government and overtly support Maithripala Sirisena, Common Candidate of the opposition.But, according to spokespersons of the opposition, the policy framework of the common candidate and the MOUs he signed with the parties who support him are completely based on the three proposals to which Minister Nanayakkara would extend his support. 

The Minister is to address a press conference in Colombo tomorrow evening to announce his decision over the matter. According to highly placed political sources, Minister Nanayakkara is going to announce that he will support any candidate who would take genuine action in this regard. "But, for the time being, he will stay with the government," political sources added.

"Although the Minister's viewpoints are very much in line with the common opposition's line of thinking, he is still worried about the presence of the UNP in the common opposition," a spokesman close to Minister Nanayakkara said. According to him, the Minister is still reluctant to share the same electoral stage with the United National Party. 

However, he further added that the Minister would take a "people-friendly" decision.

However, a senior spokesman of the common opposition expressed confidence  Asian Mirror that Minister Nanayakkara would extend his support to Maithripala Sirisena, sooner or later, as he has been a strong critique of the Executive Presidency, from the very outset.
