Western Provincial Council member of the UPFA, Hirunika Premachandra joined the common opposition a short while ago, extending her support to Maithripala Sirisena.
She announced her decision addressing a press conference at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colmbo.
Addressing the press conference, Premachandra added that she would support common candidate of the opposition Maithripala sirisena at the upcoming presidential election.
"No justice has been done to my father, who was killed three years ago. Perpetrators are walking around freely. They even attend the high profile events attended by the President. I don't know how it happens," Premachandra added.
"I wanted to step out of the government before. But there was no leadership. The moment we found the right leadership, I decided to make a move," the Provincial Councilor added.
"The old members of the SLFP," Premachandra said," have been sidelined and the privileges have been given those who have come from outside."
She made it clear that the former President did not force her to join the opposition." She asked me to think carefully. She urged me to think about my security as I am a girl. But I am not afraid of anything and I decided to join the common opposition, to make Maithripala Sirisena the President."
The provincial councilor said no uncertain terms that Maithripala Sirisena would emerge victorious at the presidential election in January, 2015. She also stated that she was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and she had no reason to leave the party."But I left the President," she said while responding to a question posed by a journalist.
She apologized to media personnel for denying media reports claiming she would cross over to the opposition. "I did that for my own security. Please understand our situation," she urged the media.
Premachandra was accompanied by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. And UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera,.
