UPFA General Secretary Susil Premjayantha made a deposit at the Elections Secretariat at Rajagiriya on Monday December 1 on behalf of Mahinda Rajapaksa who will be the UPFA’s Presidential Candidate at the forthcoming Presidential Election which will be held on January 8.
After the deposit was made SLFP General Secretary Attorney Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the UPFA Candidate will win with a higher percentage of votes at the coming election than at the previous one. He added that all preparations have been made in this connection.
According to him, along with the SLFP 14 more parties have already joined the Alliance. He said that more political parties and groups are expected to join the UPFA in the coming weeks. SLFP National Organiser Basil Rakapaksa, MEP Leader Dinesh Gunawardana, Senior Minister AHM Fowzie and CWC President Muththu Sivalingam were among the UPFA leaders and activists who were present at the occasion.
A candidate from a recognized political party has to make a deposit of Rs.50,000 while other candidates have to make deposits of Rs.75,000 each. According to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya, 15 million 540 thousand 492 voters are eligible to vote at the coming election.
