Common Candidate of the opposition Maithripala Sirisena and opposition leader Ranil Wickemesinghe will hold discussions at Sirikotha, the UNP headquarters, today to finalize the agreement pertaining to the common opposition.
Sirisena arrived at the UNP headquarters in Pitakotte a short while ago and received a warm welcome from a large number of UNP supporters who were gathered at the Sirikotha premises.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake also attended the event to welcome the common candidate of the opposition.
The Common Candidate and the UNP have already agreed to form a national government for 100 days after coming to power with the aim of abolishing Executive Presidency and introducing constitutional reforms.
At the first press conference of Sirisena, he publicly stated that the Parliament will be changed into a constitutional council to devise a new cionstitution.
The opposition’s common candidate for the Presidential Election, Maithripala Sirirsena is likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the opposition parties and civil organizations on November 28.
Media reports have stated that representatives from over 30 political parties and civil organizations are to be present at the event.
Abolition of the Executive Presidency, Repealing the 18th amendment and re-enforcing the 17th amendment to the constitution, reforming the electoral system, ensuring freedom of media will be some of the key factors that will appear in the MOU.
Following the MOU, the parties will work together to finalize the election manifesto of Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena. The opposition has still not arrived at a final decision on the launch date of the election manifesto.
