Social activist Kelum Jayasumana, arrested for sharing Mahaviru commemoration posts on social media, has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) alleged that Kelum had reposted a picture containing banned LTTE symbols, initially shared by a French woman, claiming it disrupted public order and ethnic harmony. However, CID officers admitted in court that no evidence or statements confirming a public disturbance had been submitted.
Magistrate Thilina Gamage questioned the lack of evidence and said that suspects cannot be remanded without proper proof of wrongdoing. Consequently, Kelum was released on two surety bails, and the case was scheduled for further hearing on April 3, 2025.
