New Mechanism Announced for Urgent Passport Requests

November 04, 2024

Acting Controller General of Immigration Nilusha Balasuriya announced that individuals requiring urgent travel permits can bring supporting documents to expedite the process. Speaking at a press conference today (4), she explained that the Immigration Department has formed an independent committee to handle such urgent cases.

Balasuriya stated, “If someone needs a passport urgently, they should first go through the system to secure an appointment date. Once they have a date, they can bring documents to demonstrate their immediate need for a passport before that date.” She encouraged individuals to present evidence of urgency to the committee, which may grant expedited relief in genuine cases.

She also emphasized that any attempt to submit fake or forged documents will result in legal action by the department.
