The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) held an online awareness program today to discuss upcoming reforms in the electricity sector, aimed at fostering a people-centric energy transition. Guided by the Ministry of Energy, the program featured insights from the Chairman and Board of Directors, addressing the necessity of organizational changes to enhance service quality and customer satisfaction, the CEB said in a press release.
In his address, the Chairman emphasized that change is an essential reality for any organization and that timely reforms are crucial for CEB's growth. He highlighted the need for periodic evaluations and proper organizational reforms to improve service quality, profitability, and employee living standards.
The reforms come in response to an external proposal initiated last year, following decades of stagnant internal reforms within CEB. With the current administration's social transformational mandate, CEB sees a significant opportunity to revitalize the energy sector.
The Board of Directors called for a collaborative effort to establish a clean and secure electricity sector that offers the lowest costs in the region over the next five years. They propose implementing a robust single-buyer market model, complemented by an Independent System Operator (ISO) and unbundled generation, transmission, and distribution licenses. This initiative will be pursued through extensive public and stakeholder consultations while ensuring that state-owned electricity sector assets remain privatization-free, the press release concluded.
