Police Reveal New Details on String of Sexual Assaults and Thefts Across Multiple Areas

The police have uncovered significant information regarding two suspects who have been terrorizing communities, committing sexual assaults against women, and stealing goods from homes, Police Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thlduwa said.

Addressing the media today (18), DIG Thalduwa said that the suspects are also alleged to have raped and killed an elderly woman.

It had been reported that a gang of thieves has been roaming the areas of Dompe, Weliweriya, and Malwatu Hiripitiya, targeting women and burglarizing homes.

Following a comprehensive investigation led by the station commander of the Malwathu Hiripitiya Police, a team of officers arrested the two suspects in the early hours of the 16th, after a six-day stakeout operation. They were apprehended while fleeing after robbing an abandoned house in the area.

DIG Talduwa during the media briefing shared details about the arrested suspects, saying, "The houses they choose are those with only one male occupant or those that are isolated on large plots of land. They often remove or tear the clothes of the residents and rape women in front of them."

He added that similar crimes have been reported not only in the Weliweriya and Kirindiwela police jurisdictions but also in Kiriella and Aheliyagoda, following the same pattern.
