Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has formally requested Thailand's assistance in rescuing Sri Lankans currently held in cybercrime camps in Myanmar's Myawaddy region. This plea was made during a meeting with Thai Ambassador Paitoon Mahapannaporn at the Prime Minister’s Office on October 10.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the rescue efforts would be coordinated with the Myanmar government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). PM Amarasuriya expressed appreciation for Thailand's previous support, which helped 28 Sri Lankans escape from similar conditions, and urged continued collaboration to free the remaining 40 detainees.
Ambassador Mahapannaporn congratulated Amarasuriya on her recent appointment and discussed enhancing bilateral relations, focusing on tourism development and agricultural technology initiatives. Key officials from both countries attended the discussions.
