A high-level delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Krishna Srinivasan, Director for the Asia Pacific Department, will be in Colombo from October 2-4, according to IMF spokesperson.
During their visit, the team is scheduled to meet with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the new economic team to discuss recent economic developments and reforms under Sri Lanka’s IMF-supported program. A statement from the IMF will be released at the conclusion of the visit.
The new Sri Lankan government has expressed the need to reassess the IMF-supported program, according to the country’s Cabinet Spokesperson. Additionally, by the end of the month, key officials—including the Central Bank Governor and the Finance Secretary—will travel to New York to engage with the IMF on structural aspects of the program.
Minister Vijitha Herath clarified that, contrary to previous claims by the former government, no final agreement has been reached with International Sovereign Bondholders. While talks had progressed, a conclusive agreement remains pending, with final decisions expected during upcoming discussions at the IMF headquarters. The Minister also reiterated the government's criticism of the domestic debt restructuring process, which will be a significant topic in future meetings, alongside obtaining necessary reports from the Justice Ministry to support the legal framework for these efforts.
