A special meeting on the security of VIPs, including former Presidents, is scheduled for this afternoon at the Ministry of Public Security. Chaired by Minister Vijitha Herath, the meeting will review current security threats faced by VIPs and is expected to take key decisions regarding their protection.
This gathering follows last week's announcement by Sri Lanka Police to withdraw security for former Members of Parliament, with only the former Speaker, former Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the Opposition retaining police protection.
Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Talduwa said that security will be provided to the former MPs who are being threatened.
Acting Inspector General Priyantha Weerasooriya also says that officers assigned to VIP security will be reassigned to regular duties.
