Popular YouTuber and blogger Bruno Divakara has filed a lawsuit against the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), claiming wrongful arrest under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). He seeks Rs. 50 million in compensation.
Bruno, the owner of the YouTube channel 'SL-Vlogs', was arrested in May 2023 after sharing footage from a controversial stand-up comedy show by Nathasha Edirisooriya, who faced backlash for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Buddhism. Following his arrest, Divakara was remanded and only released in June 2024, alongside Edirisooriya.
The case raises significant concerns regarding freedom of expression in Sri Lanka and the legal boundaries surrounding content sharing on social media platforms.
