President Wickremesinghe Pays Tribute to Late R. Sampanthan

 

President Ranil Wickremesinghe honored the late R. Sampanthan, recognizing him as a leader dedicated to the rights of all Sri Lankans, including the Tamil community. Speaking at Sampanthan’s funeral in Trincomalee, the President highlighted their shared commitment to an undivided Sri Lanka and urged unity in concluding discussions initiated by Sampanthan.

The funeral, attended by numerous political figures from both the government and the opposition, marked the loss of a significant leader and former Leader of the Opposition. President Wickremesinghe expressed deep sorrow, recalling Sampanthan as a long-time friend and affirming his dedication to resolving issues faced by the Tamil people.

Announcing the readiness of the National Land Commission Bill for parliamentary submission, the President highlighted its role in addressing land issues for Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities in collaboration with the Department of Forest.

President Wickremesinghe also praised Sampanthan’s tenure as Leader of the Opposition, describing him as a true representative of all Sri Lankans. He confirmed that the presidential election would proceed this year despite any court challenges, with subsequent parliamentary and provincial council elections to follow.
