CBK's Authority in SLFP Questioned

President's Counsel Maithri Gunaratne, representing former President Maithripala Sirisena, has challenged the authority of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Gunaratne argued that Kumaratunga is not a member of the SLFP and thus lacks the authority to intervene in the party's internal affairs or file a court case.

Gunaratne's objections were submitted in a written statement to Colombo Chief District Judge Sandun Withana. This development occurred during a hearing regarding an injunction that prevents Sirisena from holding the position of SLFP Chairman. Gunaratne said that Kumaratunga's petition relied on the 2022 party constitution, which is currently suspended by both the court and the election commissioner. He insisted that as a non-member, Kumaratunga has no right to interfere in the party's matters, and her petition should be dismissed.

Judge Withana extended the injunction preventing Sirisena from assuming the role of SLFP Chairman until June 19.

The injunction preventing the removal of SLFP Senior Vice President Mahinda Amaraweera, Treasurer Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and National Organizer Duminda Dissanayake from their positions has been extended until July 30 to allow the respondents time to file objections.
