New Electricity Bill Presented to Sri Lankan Parliament

Today, Minister of Power & Energy Kanchana Wijesekera introduced the Sri Lanka Electricity Bill to the Parliament, marking a significant step towards proposed electricity sector reforms. The new bill, which supersedes the Ceylon Electricity Board Act of 1969 and the Sri Lanka Electricity Act of 2009, aims to modernize the country's electricity industry.

Proposed reforms, outlined in a Gazette publication earlier this month, detail the establishment of the National Electricity Advisory Council and designate the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka as the regulatory body for the electricity sector. The bill also outlines legislative measures for incorporating corporate entities responsible for various aspects of electricity generation, transmission, distribution, trade, supply, and procurement.

If passed, the Sri Lanka Electricity Bill will bring about comprehensive changes to the nation's electricity landscape, addressing key issues and laying the groundwork for a more efficient and sustainable future.
