In response to escalating security concerns, approximately 100 Intelligence Officers from the police force in the Western Province have been reassigned to bolster security measures in Colombo.
Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon's directive aims to reinforce security and deter crimes, particularly vehicle thefts and gold necklace robberies, as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year approaches. The redeployment comes amid intensified police operations nationwide against the underworld and drug trade. Previously stationed in the Western Province, these intelligence officers now join general duties in Colombo, as authorities maintain their focus on combating criminal activities.
Notably, intelligence officers have also been tasked with identifying and rooting out corrupt police officers involved in illicit activities. Despite the upcoming festival season, police spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa affirmed that special operations targeting criminals and drug traffickers will persist.
