Recent fuel price revisions have sparked debates about the sections of society most affected by economic challenges.
Lalith Dharmasekera, President of the All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU), highlighted the disparity in the recent reduction of Petrol 95 Octane by Rs.7 and super diesel by Rs. 72.Dharmasekera pointed out that the decision-makers opted not to lower the prices of auto diesel and petrol 92 Octane, arguing that this move disproportionately affects those who rely heavily on super diesel.
He criticized the government for seemingly prioritizing the needs of higher socio-economic classes over ordinary citizens, citing the lack of fuel concessions for sectors like three-wheeler operators. While acknowledging Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera for maintaining prices for auto diesel and petrol 92 Octane, Dharmasekera voiced concerns about the government's approach, accusing it of exploiting dissent and neglecting the welfare of the populace.
He concluded by expressing skepticism about the government's plans to extend benefits primarily to higher-class citizens, suggesting a disregard for the lower class.
