UNESCO's Executive Board, at its 219th Session, unanimously adopted a landmark Decision to commemorate the International Day of Vesak, aligning with UNESCO's mission of fostering global peace and preserving cultural heritage.
This decision, based on the historic UN General Assembly Resolution 54/115 of 1999, was spearheaded by Sri Lanka's former Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, and adopted on its 25th anniversary at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The Decision, co-sponsored by 38 member states, requests UNESCO's Director-General to issue an annual message and make arrangements to commemorate Vesak annually at UNESCO Headquarters, starting this year.
Ambassador Manisha Gunasekera of Sri Lanka highlighted the universal significance of Vesak, emphasizing its alignment with UNESCO's objectives. Ambassador Vishal Sharma of India praised the Decision, citing the enduring relevance of the Buddha's teachings. The Decision received endorsement from UNESCO's leadership and support from member states across regions, underscoring its global significance.
