Prime Minister Announces Thorough Inquiry Into Controversial Remarks by CEB Media Spokesman

February 22, 2024

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane has promised a thorough investigation into the contentious statements made by the media spokesman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

The Prime Minister's assurance came in response to demands for accountability and action from Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The controversy centers around the CEB spokesman's remarks suggesting that children should resort to studying under oil lamps, a statement that sparked outrage and criticism for its insensitivity towards the challenges faced by the population amid power shortages.

Furthermore, the spokesman's comments implying that men in estates turn to alcohol consumption post-2 pm were criticized as derogatory and insulting towards the estate community.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised these issues in Parliament, calling for immediate action against the spokesman for his disparaging remarks.

In response, Prime Minister Gunawardane stated that he has directed the relevant authorities to initiate a disciplinary inquiry against the media spokesperson.
