Pastor Jerome Fernando, at the center of a recent controversy over a contentious Sunday sermon, is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) once again this morning to provide further statements. This follows a lengthy 9-hour session at the CID premises yesterday.
Fernando, who returned to Sri Lanka yesterday after a court order issued last week prevented authorities from arresting him in connection with the controversial sermon, left the CID premises late in the evening after his initial statement.
The pastor's return to Sri Lanka reignited the public discourse surrounding his sermon, which had sparked controversy for alleged insults directed at Buddhism. Fernando's sermon had triggered widespread condemnation, leading to police action against him.
The CID had summoned Fernando to record his statement in relation to the controversial remarks made during the Sunday sermon. The initial questioning session lasted for an extended period, with the pastor reportedly cooperating with investigators.
