Police officers and soldiers have been deployed to take over ticketing duties on expressways as a result of a trade union action by Expressway Ticketing Officers.
The Director General of the Road Development Authority (RDA) confirmed this development earlier today.
Sri Lanka employs about 11000 expressway employees and they have launched a token strike demanding solutions to their grievances.
The decision to deploy members of the security forces to issue tickets comes as a response to the ongoing trade union action initiated by Expressway Ticketing Officers.
Commuters were taken aback this morning as uniformed police officers and soldiers manned toll counters along major expressways, issuing tickets and managing toll transactions.
