Sri Lanka Records Slight Increase in Year-on-Year Inflation, Food Prices Remain Stable

November 21, 2023

The Department of Census and Statistics has reported a marginal uptick in the overall rate of inflation, measured by the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI), on a year-on-year basis.

In October 2023, the inflation rate increased to 1.0%, up from 0.8% in September 2023, signaling a modest rise in the cost of goods and services in the country.

Despite the overall increase, one notable aspect is the stability in food prices, which remained unchanged in October 2023 at -5.2%, aligning with the figures reported in September 2023. This steady trend in food inflation suggests that essential food items have maintained their affordability, providing a degree of relief to consumers amid economic challenges.

The Department of Census and Statistics regularly monitors and reports on inflation rates, providing valuable insights into the economic landscape. The marginal increase in the overall inflation rate reflects the ongoing economic conditions in Sri Lanka.
