November 21, 2023

Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, presented the National Hydrogen Road Map to President Ranil Wickremesinghe during the Sri Lanka Green Hydrogen Symposium 2023. The event, organized by the Petroleum Development Authority of Sri Lanka in collaboration with USAID, showcased the country's commitment to embracing innovative solutions for a greener future.

During the symposium, President Wickremesinghe, citing the UN emission report for 2023, drew attention to broken promises in climate action and underscored the alarming potential for a 3-degree increase in temperature by the end of the century. Emphasizing the urgency to address climate change, he highlighted the need to strive for a target that limits the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees by 2030.

As a proactive measure, President Wickremesinghe proposed the establishment of an energy transition law. He stressed the importance of forming a multi-agency committee to guide decision-making, taking a holistic approach that considers economic factors, pricing structures, and long-term impacts when determining the feasibility of energy projects.

The unveiling of the National Hydrogen Road Map marks a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's efforts to combat climate change and transition towards sustainable energy sources. Hydrogen, known for its potential as a clean and renewable energy carrier, is positioned as a key player in the country's green energy future.
