November 17, 2023

In a commendable move, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), under the leadership of SLC President Shammi Silva and the Executive Committee, took a moment to recognize the achievements of Asian Games 2023 medal winners. Despite facing challenges in the cricketing arena, SLC acknowledged the dedication and success of 11 athletes and two coaches who brought honor to the country on the international stage.

The recognition ceremony, held at the SLC Headquarters, was attended by key figures, including Mr. Shammi Silva, President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr. Ravin Wickramaratne, Vice President, Mr. Sujeeva Godaliyadda, Treasurer, Mr. Chryshantha Kapuwatte, Acting Secretary, and Mr. Lasantha Wickremesinghe, Assistant Treasurer of SLC. Olympic Medalist Ms. Susanthika Jayasinghe, Consultant for Mentoring and Development of Women’s Cricket in Sri Lanka, also participated, along with other notable guests.

Tharushi Karunaratne, the Gold Medalist, Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge, the Silver Medalist, and the remaining nine athletes who clinched bronze medals during the Asian Games 2023 were honored and presented with cash awards. Coaches Susantha Fernando and Pradeep Nishantha, mentors of Tharushi Karunaratne and Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge, respectively, were also recognized for their contributions.

The cash awards amounted to Rs. 10 million for Tharushi Karunaratne's gold medal, an additional Rs. 1 million for her bronze medal, and Rs. 5 million for Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge's silver medal. The remaining athletes received Rs. 1 million each for their bronze medals.

This celebration of athletic achievement comes at a time when Sri Lanka Cricket is grappling with challenges, including the national team's poor performance at the ICC World Cup 2023 and the looming threat of a ban from the ICC due to perceived political interference.
