The Ministry of Education has initiated a thorough investigation into a tragic incident at a school in Wellampitiya where a primary student lost their life, and several others sustained injuries after a school wall collapsed on a group of students on Wednesday (15). Education Minister Susil Premajayantha has directed officials at the Zonal Education Office to conduct the investigation promptly and furnish an immediate report.

The Jayawardenapura Zonal Education Office has confirmed that they will promptly commence the investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the collapse of the school wall.

Reports indicate that a six-year-old student lost their life in the incident, while five other students were injured. The injured students were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital, with one of them admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo. Hospital sources have disclosed that one of the five students at the National Hospital is in critical condition, while the student at Lady Ridgeway Hospital has not sustained serious injuries.

Following the tragic incident, local residents reportedly attacked the school principal. The unrest prompted the temporary suspension of academic activities at the school, with a plan to resume classes on Monday (Nov. 20).
